Weekend in the Woods Part III: The Night Before the Festival
Thank God I made it to Festival… I had signal on my phone in Garberville, but when I arrived at Piercy, not one bar from AT&T. So I borrowed Vanessa’s phone to call Mrs. A(the lady who I am helping out). She did not pick up at all and my heart jumped right out of my chest! I had to get in contact with the person who I am camping with, so Luke and I asked around, we went to will call to for our names, nope! not there either. You could only imagine what is going through my head.
In any case, I found a call box and waited about 15 minutes for this Rastaman to get off the phone… mind you Im hungry, sleepy and getting really angry as he continues to put quarters in. At this point 15 minutes seems like an hour, I wanted to go over and just yell out all my Jamaican curse words that I know:all the claats and private areas that are supposed to be unspoken of; but I kept my cool and sure enough, he finally got off. I called her phone and… yes! She answered! I told her where I am and told her I will be at Will Call.
A few minutes later here come Mrs. A on the back of a ATV.Finally a familiar face! We walked and talked and it was really dark she had her flash light and everything was a bit brighter. As we walked to our camping area, it reminded me of the lanes and alleys I would walk through in Jamaica, the reggae music on tiny stereos, the smell of sensimilla, the occasional patios outburst, the dirt roads, the shack-looking camps, little flickers of kerosene oil lamps, and Ethiopian/Jamaican flags in every other camp area.
I think I am gonna be ok… these are my people and Im sure I will be at home. I got a tour of the place, but it was night and Im fatigues so I did not go out and venture, thats for tommorow. Right now I want a nice bed and maybe some teaming hot tea. I have my Kimora Lee Simmons ” Fabulosity”book. So I can definately read myself to sleep BUT…..!
Mrs. A said to me, “I cannot sleep around here”, why would that be? I wondered. Then I heard VRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOM, behind the tent. Oh yeah this ought to be good…. I chuckled.
To Be continued….
